Cranes are large birds with long legs and necks. In Japan and other East Asian cultures, they represent luck and long life.
Japanese tradition says a person who folds one thousand paper cranes gets the right to make a wish. Some schoolchildren in the United States have been folding cranes.
They want to show they care about the victims of the March eleventh earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
Almost forty Japanese-American students attend Somerville Elementary School in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
But all five hundred twenty-five students at the school have heard about the disasters.
So they have decorated their school with paper origami cranes.
Their wish is for a speedy recovery for the Japanese people.
Art teacher Samantha Stankiewicz says the activity gave students a way to express empathy for victims. She says, "For children, the folding of the cranes has been a really positive way for them to feel like they're actively engaged."One boy said, "The crane is a symbol of hope, so we try to have a lot of hope for those people in Japan."
And a girl at the school said, "It makes me feel really happy that everyone's caring for another country."
And that care was not just in the form of paper cranes. The school principal, Lorna Oates-Santos, says children at Somerville Elementary raised about two thousand dollars for disaster relief agencies.
The two agencies they chose were the American Red Cross and Save the Children.
The school also has a television club that produces weekly programs on different subjects.
Fourth-grade teacher Gabrielle King is the director of the club, and says the students were involved in the school's efforts.
"When the earthquake happened," she says, "the children wanted to know what they could do to inform other students and raise awareness for the people in Japan."
So they decided to do a show on the earthquake and to also make the origami cranes. Some American children have shown their feelings for the victims in Japan in other ways.
Yasuhisa Kawamura is Japan's deputy consul general in New York.He says one young girl brought a painting she had made to the consulate.
The painting showed the two countries, Japan and the United States, shaking hands over the ocean, and saying "We are with you."
Mr. Kawamura said consulate staff members were "very moved and touched by this young girl's expression."
The East Asia Program at Cornell University in the United States has a lesson plan and directions for folding origami cranes. You can find a link at voaspecialenglish.com. For VOA Special English, I'm Alex Villarreal.

A Little Prayer in My Memory

I have so many memories in Bedugul. once when I was 8 years old, roughly about 10 years ago, my family and I went to the island of the dewata. Our family visited tourist spots bedugul. Throughout our trip As in shaken by a giant monster because of the way we passed a very steep and winding berkeok. Cukum the travel time in a long time, which is about 2 hours. Once there we got out of the car and looking for a comfortable place to relax. Bedugul It was the most amazing of places I've ever visited. With a cool mountains, vast green land, colorful flower gardens blooming colorful, scenery subhanallah once. Being there is like carrying a sense of great peace. Before exploring the entire region bedugul me and my family eat together beforehand, on the sidelines eating we joked and laughed merrily, the warmth of togetherness we add my impression here. After eating me and my cousin raka a walk around the garden roses, fragrant once there.
I and raka play and run around the garden is. when I ran a little way, I find a greenhouse in which there are various kinds of cactus plants. out of curiosity I went into the house, and the beautiful flowers blooming cactus. I found a pencil there, and scrawled a little prayer at the table "God grant me the opportunity once again to come back here again (rose garden, cactus house) one day with the one you're destined with me". After writing the call to prayer raka come back. After running around, we break out in the garden where we were meeting, looking at the blue lake and charming westerlies. Wanted me there. Once satisfied and the time the afternoon we headed back home. Wonderful memories I will never forget. The beauty and warmth of togetherness bedugul us.
Two years after that I came back memorie to dewata island. but we come to bedugul tag, a little disappointed by it. The two times I was there, but there is never a chance to get there. Hope it in I kept until now.

And eight months ago, I was back there in the end of the  holiday event. To bedugul before we come to the various tourist places in Bali, but this is the most I wait, Bedugul. "Welcome back bedugul" I immediately rushed down from bi and hmmmmm ..... atmosphere remains cool, beautiful scenery does not change at all. I walked into a restaurant for lunch, this time I did not to garden once I went to, but I came to his lake, lake westerlies. I enjoy my food with my friends, after dinner we decided to take a walk around the lake and take pictures. suddenly my friend took me for a boat ride fast. it's great spinning fast boat ride on the lake. and I was surprised when my friend invited me to sit in front of the boat, after which she said that she loved me and wanted to be my boyfriend. At that time I was so embarrassed, excited and nervous. Upon arrival at the villa wanna village, I said that I loved her.
Find the place that my beautiful love heed my story here. My prayers for the return home of cactus and rose garden will always be stored in my little heart. someday I'm sure my little prayer that would lead me to get there with my beautiful love.
